Last Dead Train

And it rained all night and it rained all day,
And the people came around to take me away,
And I couldn't understand the words in your mouth,
And it must have been Winter, we were heading south,

And the last dead train is pulling away,
And I couldn't work out which words I could say,
And all our old idols are quickly defaced,
And as soon as you're gone you will be replaced,

And I doubt very much we will see this through,
And I don't quite know what we're going to do,
And a free cup of coffee at a railway side,
Stands cold and abandoned like a favour declined,

And if I try really hard I can almost see,
With the right kind of eyes through the right kind of meat,
If we're all just headed to the same damned place,
You can damn well take that smile off your face,

And it rained all night and it rained all day,
And the people came around to take me away,
And I can't understand the words in your mouth,
And it must have been winter we were heading South.

Caravan by the Sea

Recently I found myself away in Lincolnshire with some friends. It was by the sea, but caravan it wasn't. This song was actually written about a place in the North Island of New Zealand called The Coromandels. While the rest of NZ was plunging headlong into winter, it's still warm up top with desserted beaches and stunning rock formations edging from the mainland out into the distance. The song's pretty self-explanatory - 3 chords, some wave sound effects...

acoustic guitar with reverb and echo effects for the three chord structure and electric for the clearer notes over the top.

I can't get over me

I have a great many opinions. Everyone does.

The point of being alive and human is to be completely self-involved and only help other people if it indirectly increases our chances of survival. Richard Dawkins said do, and I'm happy to go along with the theory.

It's one of those things that is a bit contentious, and I can't convince many on. "But I enjoy helping people" my girlfriend chants. Yes, you do - because your brain tells you it's a good idea since they might return the favour.

Dawkins is also in the same camp as I when it comes to religion. The religious instinct goes against the natural human drive to survive, by promising humans something else after death. A tempting prospect, but religion (and I am being hugely general) loses it's way when it convinces it's followers to put their lives on the line in it's name. It's all a matter of faith, I'm informed.

I was recently told that I shouldn't have such radical views and try to force them on others. When the Jehova's Witlesses appear at my door, is that not what they are trying to do? When we're brought up being told there is a god and a Santa Claus, we follow obediently. It it more injust to convince someone life's better once your dead than to ask them to enjoy life while they can - 'cos that's your lot?

It's a lengthy rant, but all classed under the things I hold as 'my opinions'. They are true and absolute from my frame of reference.

I wrote the following song in New Zealand whilst sitting in the back of a camper-van and ponding such ponderables. Essentially it's saying that belief is mis-guided and that my own beliefs are unshatterable - there's a certain amount of irony in there.

Most of my more recent stuff has been recorded with Adobe Audition through a 4-track cassette deck and then slotted into Fruity Loops with extra drums and sound effects pulled in from there.
